Sacramento Leaders, Kings Spar Over Retiring Kevin Johnson Jersey

The Sacramento City Council last night was preparing to vote on a resolution saying it was partnering with the NBA Kings to honor Kevin Johnson with a "Mayor KJ" jersey at Golden 1 Center, but the team "denied any such thing would take place." The Kings in a statement said, "In addition to the wall honoring the Mayor and city council for their efforts to save our team, we do not have any immediate plans to retire his jersey." A spokesperson for Vice Mayor Rick Jennings said that Jennings "had discussed the matter" with Kings President Chris Granger (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/7). The council "unanimously approved the resolution despite the controversy" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/7).
