NHL Heritage Classic Draws Crowd Of 33,000 In Sunny Winnipeg

The Oilers beat the Jets 3-0 yesterday in the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic outdoor game at Investors Group Field before a crowd of 33,240. Winnipeg "produced a wonderful weekend and a spectacular scene and there were no lack of memories." Fans were "forced to wait two hours" for the game to start "due to too much sun." Before the game, the Jets had "nine players outside in the end zone wearing shorts warming up, booting a soccer ball around." This contrasts to the '03 Heritage Classic in Edmonton, where temperatures reached -30 degrees C (EDMONTON SUN, 10/24). This marked the third time the NHL "had an outdoor delay because of the sun's rays" (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 10/24). More than 31,000 fans attended Saturday's Alumni Game (Mult., 10/23).

The Jets' ownership group, which for "five seasons seemed to want nothing to do with the rich history of 'the Jets'" in Winnipeg, "went all in on this city's hockey history over the past week, right down to the glorious red pants and throwback jerseys the Jets sported Sunday" (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, 10/24). The GLOBE & MAIL goes with the header, "With Heritage Classic, Winnipeg Celebrates The Jets And The Future" (GLOBE & MAIL, 10/22).
