NHL Franchises Open Season With Ceremonies, Celebrations

A collection of NHL trophies – including the Stanley Cup – "will be on public display" in downtown Pittsburgh from 12:00-5:00pm ET today before the Penguins’ season opener against the Capitals at PPG Paints Arena. Fans can line up beginning at 9:00am to "take their own photos with the trophies" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 10/13).

The Panthers before their season opener tonight against the Devils will drop their '15-16 Atlantic Division championship banner from the rafters, and all fans in attendance "will be given a replica banner as well as a schedule magnet for the upcoming season." Fans will also receive a bobblehead of RW Jaromir Jagr before Saturday’s game against the Red Wings (MIAMI HERALD, 10/13).

The Maple Leafs today will "unveil their latest additions to Legends Row," the collection of statues outside Air Canada Centre, which will "grow to 10 with the likenesses of Dave Keon, Tim Horton and Turk Broda." The unveiling at 5:30pm ET is "part of the weekend festivities surrounding the Leafs’ home opener" Saturday against the Bruins, which also "includes the team’s top 100 players of all time" (TORONTO STAR, 10/13).

Meanwhile, the Sharks prior to their season opener last night against the Kings unveiled their NHL Western Conference Championship banner in the rafters of SAP Center, "drawing a unique noise from the sold-out crowd that was half celebration and half oh-what-might-have-been" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 10/13).
