NCAA To Move Seven Championship Events From N.C. Due To HB2

The NCAA last night announced that it will "move seven of its championship events out of North Carolina" in '16-17 "because of House Bill 2." That includes the first and second rounds of the '17 NCAA men’s basketball tournament scheduled for the Greensboro Coliseum on March 17 and 19 (Greensboro NEWS & RECORD, 9/13).

NCAA President Mark Emmert said the decision to pull the events “was the proverbial no-brainer” for university presidents. He said, “We had a process by which all the individual bidders were able to express their views of what they could do around this. But in the end, the board realized that with this law in place, they simply can’t be successful there” (“CBS This Morning,” 9/13).

ACC Commissioner John Swofford in a statement last night said that the conference "would not make decisions about ACC championships until discussing HB2 at previously scheduled meetings this week." But he added that he personally believed it was "time for the law to be repealed." The ACC football championship is slated for Charlotte in December (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 9/13).
