Arthur Ashe Stadium Roof Closes For First Time During U.S. Open Play

The roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium "began to close" for the first time last night at about 10:39pm ET during the U.S. Open match between Rafael Nadal and Andreas Seppi. The two "paused to let the roof close as light rain was falling." It "took about 5 minutes 35 seconds for the roof to close." Play was "suspended for a total of 7 minutes 22 seconds" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/1).

Meanwhile, a spectator at the U.S. Open "was handcuffed, arrested and charged after jumping onto Court 13 and attempting to engage Kateryna Bondarenko after her match ended" last night just before 8:00pm. The fan was "believed to be seeking an autograph or a selfie with the Ukrainian athlete." USTA Managing Dir of Communications Chris Widmaier said, "We are very pleased our security and the NYPD acted as quickly as they did" (ESPN.com, 8/31).
