Laugh Track: At A More Convenient Time

CBS’ Stephen Colbert noted 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has “refused to stand for the National Anthem." Colbert: "It is a shocker that something interesting happened during a preseason game. After the game, Kaepernick explained, ‘I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.’ Wow! No matter how you feel about his actions, you have to admit that took guts. I think football fans tend to be pretty patriotic. Though obviously, they all hate the Patriots. Of course, Kaepernick's getting some blowback from his fellow players.” Colbert noted Giants OL Justin Pugh tweeted, "I will be STANDING during the National Anthem tonight," and called Kaepernick's protest "disrespectful." Colbert said, "Yes, that is the nature of protests. They must always be respectful. ‘What do we want!? Racial justice. When do we want it!? Later, the game’s on! Maybe halftime at the earliest!’” Colbert: “Folks on the internet are saying Kaepernick's protest isn’t that important because right now he’s just a second-stringer and they have a point. I mean after all, nobody paid attention to the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech until MLK won that slam-dunk contest” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 8/29).

Last night’s edition of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” featured the “Picture This” segment where host Jimmy Fallon displayed two different pictures from two different social media accounts with the same caption. Fallon aired a pictures from the NFL and CVS’ social media accounts with the caption, “When you see this, you know it’s September!” The NFL posted a picture of a football game, CVS posted a picture of Christmas decorations. Fallon: “It’s coming soon, you might as well get it now cheap” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 8/29).
