Martin Brodeur Honored At Devils Game, With Number Retired

The Devils prior to last night's home game against the Oilers retired Martin Brodeur's No. 30 and placed his jersey in the rafters in a "moving on-ice ceremony" at Prudential Center. Brodeur, currently Blues Assistant GM, was "serenaded with chants of 'Thank You Marty!' and 'Marty's Better!' from the capacity crowd." A statue of Brodeur was unveiled Monday. Hockey luminaries present last night included Lou Lamoriello, Jacques Lemaire, Jacques Caron, Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko and Scott Niedermayer (ESPN.com, 2/9). Brodeur said of Lamoriello's presence, "If he wouldn't be here, there'd be something missing" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/10).

Brodeur took out a full-page ad in today's Newark Star-Ledger depicting a photo of himself "saluting Devils fans with a raised stick, the same pose he had handpicked for his statue." The message in thick block letters reads, "Thank You New Jersey" (NJ.com, 2/10).
