U.S. Soccer To Face Scrutiny In Senate Hearing Over Corruption

The U.S. Soccer Federation is expected to face "aggressive scrutiny" today in a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing about the FIFA corruption scandal. Senators on the subcommittee said that they "wanted to determine what involvement or knowledge U.S. Soccer officials had of the possible criminal activity laid out by federal prosecutors in indictments unsealed last month." The USSF will be represented by CEO & Secretary General Dan Flynn (N.Y. TIMES, 7/11).

A panel invited FIFA President Sepp Blatter to "answer questions" at the hearing, but a congressional official said that FIFA "declined on his behalf." Also missing will be President Sunil Gulati. U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran's (R-Kan.) office said that Flynn was "the highest ranking official U.S. Soccer was willing to send" to testify (REUTERS, 7/13).
