USGA's Mike Davis Calls U.S. Open At Chambers Bay A "Success"

USGA Exec Dir Mike Davis said that the U.S. Open, which concluded yesterday, was an "overwhelming success and, down the road, people will remember only the drama of the final few holes – not the talk of the bumpy greens and lack of quality spectator viewing areas." Davis: "Let’s look at how the golf course performed, because at the end of it all that trumps everything." Despite complaints from fans and some players, Pierce County Exec Pat McCarthy said that the "feedback she received was overwhelmingly positive, and she hopes it helps set the stage for a return U.S. Open visit" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/22). Golfer Billy Horschel said it is "very disappointing to hold a championship-caliber tournament on greens like this," adding he "lost a little bit of respect for the USGA this week" (Mult., 6/21).

Using feedback from the tourney, Chambers Bay officials "will make changes as they undoubtedly attempt to bring the national championship back to the Pacific Northwest" (SEATTLEPI.com, 6/21). The "final memory of this golf tournament was pure, unadulterated, unscripted drama." The "final stretch of three holes was absolutely riveting" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/22).

Twitter reactions to Fox' coverage: Bleacher Report’s Dan Levy: “What's amazing with Fox, is that after Dustin's finish, they didn't have Greg Norman talk about what losing feels like. Silence.” Golf Digest’s Ron Sirak: “The only entity who had a worse experience at #USOpenChambersBay today that Dustin Johnson was FOX.” NFL.com’s Bryan Fischer: “I think I like Golf Joe Buck more than Football Joe Buck and definitely more than Baseball Joe Buck.” Awful Announcing: "Bottom line for Fox golf: talent is ok, some of the innovations are good, but there are so many minor errors it is nearly suffocating."
