Condition Of Fan Hit By Bat At Fenway Park Upgraded To "Fair"

The condition of Tonya Carpenter, the woman hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park on Friday night, “has been upgraded to fair.” The Red Sox yesterday said Carpenter’s well-being is "forefront in our minds." In the wake of Carpenter's injury, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that the league “will re-evaluate fan safety at stadiums” (AP, 6/8).

Prior to the start of last night’s MLB Draft, Manfred said, “When you have an incident like this, you have to go back and re-evaluate where you are on all of your safety issues. Trust me, we will do that – just like we are on a variety of issues right now at the beginning of my tenure.” He said the review process will involve all 30 clubs and likely the MLBPA. But he stopped well short of specifically promising increased netting at ballparks (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).
