Thousands Of U.S. Fans On Hand For Women's World Cup Match

The U.S. national team in its debut game of the '15 FIFA Women's World Cup defeated Australia 3-1 before a sellout crowd of 31,148, "including thousands who made the trip across the border" for last night's match in Winnipeg. Thousands of fans "painted their faces, waved flags or chanted, 'U-S-A.'" U.S. coach Jill Ellis said that "players came off the pitch after warmup saying it felt like a home game" (WINNIPEG SUN, 6/9). There were an "estimated 15,000 American fans in the house" (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, 6/9). Team USA "entered the pitch to a roar that solidified its status as the unofficial home team" (WINNIPEG SUN, 6/9).
