MLS, MLSPU Reach New CBA, Avoiding First Work Stoppage

MLS and the MLSPU late last night announced that they had reached an agreement on terms of a new CBA. The new deal, which covers five years through the '19 season, ensures the league starts the season on time tomorrow. The deal will now allow for limited free agency based on age and experience, a first for MLS, as well as a raise to the minimum salary, the two most highly contested issues in the process. Further details on the agreement, as well as a press conference, are expected today, but the following are highlights of the agreement:

  • Free agency for players 28 years old or older, with at least eight years experience.
  • Player compensation through free agency is capped at fixed percentages based on former salary.
  • Minimum salary of $60,000, increased from the current minimum of $36,500.
  • Increase in overall team salary budget.
