World Cup Win Punctuates Germany's Resurgence On Global Stage

Germany's 1-0 win over Argentina in yesterday's World Cup final "fit neatly into a moment in which Germans are becoming increasingly aware of their country's geopolitical and economic resurgence." Following the win, "tens of thousands of people filled the 2,000-foot-long stretch between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column in central Berlin, a space that organizers dubbed the Fan Mile" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/14).

The match is earning front-page treatment in the U.S. Wall Street Journal, top of A1, “German Teamwork Wins World Cup” … USA Today, center of A1, “Das Cup” … N.Y. Times , top of A1, “Germany’s Cup of Joy” … Miami Herald, top of A1, “113th-Minute Triumph” … Washington Post, center of A1, “Cup Ends, But Conflict Doesn’t” … L.A. ABC's "GMA," NBC's "Today" and "CBS This Morning" all teased the World Cup final in their opening segments, and aired reports within the first 17 minutes of their broadcasts. Last night's edition of CBS' "Evening News" reported on the World Cup final at about 12 minutes into the broadcast, with a highlight of Germany's game-winning goal. NBC's "Nightly News" was pre-empted due to the net's U.S. Senior Open coverage, and ABC's "World News" was pre-empted due to World Cup coverage.

Louis Vuitton runs a full-page ad in the N.Y. Times touting the fact that its luggage is used to transport the World Cup trophy with the copy, "Victory travels in Louis Vuitton" (THE DAILY).

The '14 FIFA World Cup in the end was "a winner," despite the fact that, before the event, it was "plagued by doubts over whether the stadiums would be ready and stay standing, and if Brazil’s people would join in the fun or try to spoil it” (AP, 7/13). Brazil "was a winner, defying naysayers." This World Cup "will go down in history as one of the most exciting in recent memory" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/14). The World Cup "was well organized despite fears that it would be chaotic” (N.Y. TIMES, 7/13).
