Trademark Ruling On Redskins Generates Headlines, Controversy

The canceling of the Redskins' trademark registration continues to dominate news cycles around the Beltway and beyond. The story appears above the fold on the cover of USA Today with the header, "Redskins Name Ruled Out Of Bounds," and the paper's rotating top-left logo feature in today's sports section depicts the Redskins' profile logo with a slash through it (THE DAILY).

Washington Post center of A1: “Opponents Of Redskins’ Name Land A Punch”
Washington Times A1 right rail: “Panel Cancels Trademarks On Redskins Name”
Politico above the fold: “Name Dropping … Redskins Trademark Canceled By PTO
Baltimore Sun A1 left rail: “U.S. Office Cancels Redskins’ Trademark”
Richmond Times-Dispatch center of A1: “Redskins Remain Confident Name Will Survive Challenge

Last night's "CBS Evening News" and "NBC Nightly News" broadcasts aired taped reports on the Redskins losing their trademark status, while ABC's "World News" broadcast did not air any report on the issue. ABC's "GMA," NBC's "Today" and "CBS This Morning" all reported on the Redskins within the first 12 minutes of their telecasts. ABC and NBC featured the case in their news briefs, while CBS aired a longer report and teased it in the show's opening (THE DAILY).

U.S. Rep Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) said to team Owner Daniel Snyder, "Be a hero to Native American children who suffer from self-esteem issues. Raise the level of integrity in the NFL. ... Say that times have changed, and you're changing along with them" (USA TODAY, 6/19). U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) said while she expects the ruling to be appealed, it is "very unlikely that someone is going to overrule the patent office on this." Cantwell: "This is a huge decision by a federal agency." U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.): "Snyder may be the last person in the world to realize this, but it's just a matter of time until he is forced to do the right thing and change the name" (ESPN.com, 6/18).
