LPGA, PGA Of America Partnering On New Women's Golf Major

The LPGA and the PGA of America are teaming up to create a new major championship for women’s golf. KPMG will be the title sponsor of the event, which will be played in June '15 and will be televised by Golf Channel and NBC. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship will debut next year at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., and will rotate around major markets. The event will replace the Wegmans LPGA Championship as the fifth major on the women’s golf calendar (Michael Smith, Staff Writer). Today's announcement will be made at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Plaza, where NBC's "Saturday Night Live" is filmed (LPGA).

The tournament relocation ends a "four-year run" for the LPGA Championship "in the Rochester area" (Westchester JOURNAL NEWS, 5/29). The area has hosted an LPGA tournament of some kind for 38 years, making women's pro golf "an institution in Rochester" (ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 5/29).
