Cleveland Area Voters Renew Sin Tax For Sports Facilities

Cuyahoga County (Ohio) voters yesterday "overwhelmingly approved a cigarette and alcohol tax renewal to support Cleveland sports facilities." The tax is expected to raise $260M over the next 20 years to "repay debts on athletic facilities" for the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 5/7). Now that the issue has passed, the "matter at hand will be to decide how to distribute the money." The clubs have said that they "hope it will be split evenly" among the three teams, but that decision "ultimately rests with county council" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 5/7).
