Sports Illustrated Names Peyton Manning '13 Sportsman Of The Year

Sports Illustrated last night named Broncos QB Peyton Manning its '13 Sportsman of the Year, marking the fourth NFL quarterback to receive the honor in the last decade. SI announced the selection of Manning last night during halftime of the Bengals-Steelers “Sunday Night Football” broadcast on NBC. Manning will be feted tonight at a ceremony in Denver. Recently retired Yankees P Mariano Rivera was among those seriously considered for the award, and Red Sox DH David Ortiz also was a finalist.

The decision prompted a few tongue-in-cheek responses on Twitter. CSN Bay Area’s Ray Ratto: “Once again, SI gets it wrong. That award belongs to Jeff Loria or nobody at all.” CSN New England's Tom Curran: "Had a feeling Peyton Manning's big playoff run last season would lock up SI's Sportsman of the Year." SB Nation and Deadspin contributor Robert Wheel: "Peyton Manning is an SI Sportsman of the Year, joining luminaries like Joe Paterno, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and Pete Rose."
