MLB's Urban Youth Academy In New Orleans Is Fourth To Open
Published November 16, 2012
MLB today is formally opening its new Urban Youth Academy in New Orleans at Wesley Barrow Stadium, which has undergone a $6.5M renovation. New Orleans marks MLB's fourth completed Urban Youth Academy following existing ones in Compton, Calif.; Houston; and Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The facility, like the others, will provide free, year-round baseball and softball instruction and education programming to youth in underserved communities in southern Louisiana. The renovated facility replaces a 55-year-old park destroyed seven years ago in Hurricane Katrina. Today's opening ceremonies will include New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landreau and MLB Exec VP & CFO Jonathan Mariner.
