NCAA BOD Could Give Some Schools More Academic Leeway

The NCAA BOD today is scheduled to hear a recommendation that would "give low-resource schools, primarily historically black colleges and universities, an additional year to meet new minimum Academic Progress Rate standards." The NCAA Committee on Academic Performance is making the proposal, though it is "unclear whether a vote will be taken this week." NCAA President Mark Emmert said that the organization "has offered to provide more money to low-resource schools." There is "almost certainly going to be some pushback from prominent programs" (AP, 4/26).

The NCAA BOD also is considering a "modified version of the proposed legislation for athletes to receive an annual $2,000 stipend." The BOD and BCS meetings together "represent another step in what some consider to be a revolutionary era in major college athletics that began last year and promises to continue with an undetermined destination" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 4/26).
