MLB Owners Meeting Expected To Include Vote On Selig Contract

MLB owners today will begin a two-day quarterly meeting in Arizona. Among the main events will be an expected two-year contract extension for Commissioner Bud Selig; a vote on the completed transfer of the Padres to an investor group led by team Vice Chair & CEO Jeff Moorad; and discussion on logistics around the newly expanded postseason.

The Selig contract issue as of late yesterday was not noted on the formal agenda, but it is expected to be added by unanimous consent. During today's meeting of MLB's Exec Council, Selig will likely be asked to excuse himself briefly while a vote on the contract happens to set up a broader vote during the meeting's general session on Thursday morning, similar to how Selig's last contract extension was handled in '08. The new term will keep Selig in office past his 80th birthday in July '14 (Eric Fisher, SportsBusiness Journal).

Sources said that a proposed relocation for the A's to San Jose is "an almost unavoidable topic of discussion" at the meeting (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/11).
