Local Votes Will Impact Soccer Aspirations In San Antonio, Sacramento

San Antonio Independent School District trustees today are scheduled to vote on whether to "remove the track from Alamo Stadium to make room for a professional-size soccer field." Informing the decision is a possible partnership with Spurs Sports & Entertainment, "which is hoping to add a professional soccer team" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 12/14).

Meanwhile, a group led by former California state Assembly Speaker and current U.S. Soccer BOD member Fabian Núñez is "exploring the possibility of landing an MLS franchise" in the Sacramento suburb of Elk Grove. One of Núñez's partners, Sacramento attorney Dick Hyde, said that the "idea is in its early stages." The Elk Grove City Council tonight is "expected to approve a negotiating agreement with Núñez's group," Northern California Soccer LLC (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/14).
