New Jersey Voters Approve Resolution To Legalize Sports Betting

New Jersey voters yesterday approved a non-binding resolution to allow sports betting at the 11 casinos in Atlantic City and the state's racetracks, "setting the stage for a showdown in federal court that could determine whether Nevada loses its virtual national monopoly on such betting" (Bergen RECORD, 11/9). State Sen. Raymond Lesniak said that he "planned to introduce legislation" today legalizing sports betting "and hoped to have it approved and on the governor's desk before the end of the year" (NJ.com, 11/8).

An NFL spokesperson said that the league "continued to oppose any expansion" of sports betting "beyond the four states" where it was legal in some form prior to the passage of a federal ban in '92 (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 11/9).
