UFL Abandons Final Two Weeks Of Season In Cost-Cutting Move

The UFL today is expected to formally announce that it is canceling the "final two regularly scheduled weeks" of the season "in a move to save money for the financially strapped" league. UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue in August said that the league lost more than $100M in its first two seasons. The UFL this year "had to delay the season by a month and contract the league from five teams to four" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 10/17). Huyghue said that the league is not "planning to shut down," and that he hopes to save $4M "in costs by abandoning the regular season" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/17).

The league is also expected to announce that it "is moving up its championship game" to Friday, "when the Virginia Destroyers will meet the Las Vegas Locomotives at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex." The change "comes after only four weeks of play" in the league's third season (HAMPTONROADS.com, 10/17).
