Violence Makes Raiders-49ers Game "Chaotic And Dangerous"

S.F. police yesterday were "seeking witnesses" to the shooting of two men and the severe beating of a third at Candlestick Park, part of a "rash of attacks and brawls that marred" Saturday's annual Raiders-49ers preseason game. Footage of fights at the stadium appeared on YouTube, "showing a chaotic and dangerous scene." The 49ers issued a statement "calling the violence 'disquieting' and pledging, with the NFL, to cooperate with law enforcement." Raiders CEO Amy Trask said the incidents were "not acceptable" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/22).

Police believe that all three victims "attended the game" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/21). An NFL spokesperson said that the league "deplored the actions of a few fans and was reviewing the incident" (L.A. TIMES, 8/22).

Meanwhile, a First Division Mexican soccer match was "suspended Saturday after gunmen opened fire on police outside the stadium." This marks the first top-tier soccer game "canceled in Mexico because of drug violence" (AP, 8/20).
