BBC, Sky To Share Media Rights For F1 Races In Seven-Year Deal

The BBC and Sky have "joined forces to secure live rights" to F1 racing in a seven-year deal from '12-18 (GUARDIAN.co.uk, 7/29). F1 team officials "have asked for clarification following the decision." McLaren-Mercedes Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said that he "wanted clarification" from F1 Management Chair Bernie Ecclestone "as he feared the sport would lose viewers if it was no longer on free-to-air television." Sky "will broadcast all the races, qualifying and practice sessions" from '12-18, while the BBC "will have the rights to half the races and qualifying" (GUARDIAN.co.uk, 7/29).
