Timbers-Sounders Match Draws Record Crowd Despite Heavy Rain

A crowd of 36,593 attended Saturday's Timbers-Sounders game at Qwest Field, a Sounders record for an MLS game. Heavy rain "put a damper on the quality of play but did little to quiet an animated crowd." The match ended in a 1-1 draw (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/16). Under the header, "This Is How Soccer Should Feel In America," the SEATTLE TIMES' Steve Kelley writes, "For the first time in America, soccer has a true rivalry. Sixteen years after the first MLS game was played, the league finally has something that leagues in Europe and South America have had forever."
