MLB-Licensed Video Games From 2K Sports, Sony Hit Stores Today

Both officially licensed MLB video games hit stores today for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. 2K Sports' "MLB 2K11," with Phillies P Roy Halladay as its cover athlete, features revamped fielding and pitching systems. 2K Sports will again award $1M to the first verified person to throw a perfect game in the video game. Sony's "MLB 11 The Show" brings back Twins C Joe Mauer as the cover athlete for the second year in a row. The game adds 3D functionality in all gameplay modes (MLB).

Sony partnered with Boise State student Hans Smith, who has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, to design an ADVA mode for the game. ADVA stands for Association for Disabled Virtual Athletes. Smith, who founded the organization, went live with advasports.org today to coincide with the release of "MLB 11 The Show." The Able Gamers Foundation "estimates that about 33 million Americans with disabilities are video game players" (N.Y. TIMES, 3/6).
