FOX SPORTS WORLD TO TELECAST MLS SUPERDRAFT LIVE TODAY

MLS will host its annual SuperDraft today beginning at10:00am ET at the Charlotte (NC) Convention Center.  For the first time in league history, a live telecast of theSuperDraft will be transmitted.  FoxSports World, which in ’04 enters the second of a four-year partnership withMLS, will televise the first hour (MLS).

The WASHINGTON POST notes that DC United will select FreddyAdu with the first pick.  Adu was inN.Y. yesterday to make media and promotional appearances before flying toCharlotte for the event.  In his firstseason, Adu “will earn $500,000, making him the league’s highest-paid player,but because of his age, that figure won’t count against United’s salary cap” (WASHINGTONPOST, 1/16).


NYC2012 TO HOST EVENT TODAY TO MAKE PUBLIC ANSWERS TO IOC

NYC2012 Founder Daniel Doctoroff and acting USOCPresident Bill Martin will host a 12:30pm ET press conference atRiverview Restaurant – location of the proposed Olympic Village – in LongIsland City, Queens, to make public the answers to the IOC’s Questionnaire forApplicant Cities (NYC2012).

The WASHINGTON POST notes that NYC2012’s 65-page reply“gives an overview of the city’s plan to host the Games and touches ontransportation issues as well as plans for venues, security andaccommodations.”  NY Gov. GeorgePataki, N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Martin included letters ofsupport (WASHINGTONPOST, 1/16).

Meanwhile, the LONDON TIMES reports that London and Parisearlier today staged “high-profile launches of their detailed plans” for the2012 Olympic Games.  Paris held itslaunch at the Eiffel Tower, while the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden hostedLondon’s launch (LONDON TIMES, 1/16).


GALLERY IN THE THOUSANDS FOLLOWS WIE DURING FIRST ROUND

The PGA Tour’s SonyOpen continues today at Waialae Country Club. Michelle Wie shot a two-over-par 72 yesterday in the first round,and the AP notes that “close to 3,000 fans – a Sunday crowd for the Sony Open –followed along” (AP,1/16).  The N.Y. TIMES reports that Wie’s gallery“probably exceeded 4,000 at its highest, but the atmosphere was almost subduedat times” (N.Y. TIMES,1/16).

Illinois-based golf instruction and equipment companyNatural Golf yesterday announced that it has reached an agreement with PGA Tourplayer Craig Bowden to become a member of its pro team.  Bowden, who is paired with Wie for the firsttwo rounds of the event, will use a Natural Golf bag and will wear a brandedhat and shirt.  Further terms of theagreement are still being finalized (Natural Golf).


GARY BETTMAN TO MEET THIS MORNING WITH TAMPA MAYOR

The TAMPA TRIBUNE reports that NHL Commissioner GaryBettman will meet with Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and other publicofficials this morning to discuss several league and local issues, includingthe effect of the league’s CBA negotiations on the Lightning, the assessedproperty value of the St. Pete Times Forum and the lack of revenue from parkingaround the Forum (TAMPATRIBUNE, 1/16).


MOTORSPORTS 2004 OPENS TODAY IN FORT WASHINGTON, PA

Motorsports 2004 presented by Sunoco begins today at 1:00pmET at the Fort Washington Expo Center in Fort Washington, PA, and thePHILADELPHIA INQUIRER reports that more than 40,000 fans “are expected toattend the show, which will feature more than 150 motorsports vehicles and countlessdisplays and memorabilia booths.”  2003NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Matt Kenseth “will become the first reigningNASCAR champion to appear in the show’s 19-year history.”  The event runs through Sunday (PHILADELPHIAINQUIRER, 1/7).


MORNING BRIEFS

Rangers Owner TomHicks, a member of the MLB Relocation Committee, said of finding a home forthe Expos, “We want to narrow it down by the May meeting and make a finaldecision by the All-Star Game” (WASHINGTONPOST, 1/16).

After a BostonHerald report yesterday stated that Reebok was in negotiations with MLB about alicensing agreement, MLB Senior VP/Merchandising Howard Smith told TheDaily, “Even if we wanted to do any other apparel deal, we can’t.  All of the deals we signed last summer areexclusive – everything is tied up.”  MLB signed $500M worthof licensing deals last summer (THE DAILY).  For more,see today’s issue of The Daily.

NASCAR Chair BrianFrance, on proposed changes to the Nextel Cup format: “Certainly it’s not aplayoff.  No matter what we do, it willnot be a playoff format.  Aplayoff implies a lot of things, notably best 2-out-of-3, singleelimination.  We’re not talking aboutsomething like that.  We’re talkingabout something that still has a big element of consistency” (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER, 1/16).

The L.A. TIMES reports that the WNBA yesterday released the’04 list of free agents.  WNBA Shock GM& head coach Bill Laimbeer: “With the salary cap in place and thetalent level improving dramatically, I suspect there will be a lot of playermovement in trades and free agents. Some movement early, a lot just before the [April] draft and a lot afterthe draft” (L.A.TIMES, 1/16).

As first reported in sister publication SportsBusinessJournal, IMG yesterday officially announced that Ole Miss QB Eli Manninghas signed with IMG for contract negotiation, marketing and financialmanagement (IMG).

The N.Y. TIMES reports that U.S. middle-distance runner ReginaJacobs, who has tested positive for THG, is “challenging the appealsprocess established for Olympic sports in the United States, saying it isbiased against accused athletes” (N.Y.TIMES, 1/16).

FLW Outdoors yesterday announced that Oh Boy! Oberto BeefJerky has signed on as the Wal-Mart FLW Tour’s official beef jerkysponsor.  Oh Boy! Oberto will sponsorall of FLW Outdoors’ tournament trails, and the Oh Boy! Oberto logo will bedisplayed on a Ranger boat during the final two days of FLW Tour competition (FLWOutdoors).

Sporting News NFLwriter Dan Pompei, on the Raiders head coaching vacancy: “It’s probablythe worst head coaching job in all of football. … You don’t get great supportfrom ownership.  Secondly, the headcoach doesn’t really have a lot of control” (“Totally Football,” FSN, 1/15).

TIMES cites a Commerce Department report that showsthat U.S. retailers “posted a lower-than-expected gain in sales inDecember.”  Retail sales rose 0.5% inDecember to $325B, “less than half the revised 1.2% gain in November.  Excluding autos, sales rose 0.1% in Decemberafter a 0.7% increase in November.” Analysts had forecasted a 0.9% rise in overall sales and a 0.4% jump innon-auto purchases (L.A.TIMES, 1/16).

MEDIA LIFE MAGAZINE reports that the median age of the ABCviewer “was up two years, to 45.3, in the fourth quarter of 2003 compared tothe same period in 2002.  CBS rose 1.6,to 53.1, while Fox rose 0.5, to 36.1. UPN rose 1.2, to 34, and the WB rose 2.0 to 32.6 years” (MEDIA LIFEMAGAZINE, 1/15).

NEWSDAY reports that the N.Y. Department of Small BusinessServices is scheduled to “continue a public hearing today on the creation” ofthe NYC Marketing Development Corp. Under a proposal between N.Y. and the NYC Marketing Development Corp.,N.Y. CMO Joseph Perello “would have the authority to sell the New YorkCity logo and brand name without entertaining competing bids or localgovernment oversight under documents submitted to create a new city marketingvehicle” (NEWSDAY,1/16).

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER cites a TNS Media Intelligence/CMRforecast released yesterday while noting that ad spending is “expected toincrease a healthy 7.8% this year to $138.4[B]” (HOLLYWOODREPORTER, 1/16).

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER notes that German media mogul LeoKirch has “filed suit in New York Supreme Court against John Malone’sLiberty Media and Deutsche Bank, claiming they conspired to destroy his rightsand broadcasting giant KirchGroup.” Kirch has “demanded [US$7.5B] in damages.  Deutsche Bank this week filed an appeal” (HOLLYWOODREPORTER, 1/16).
