FOXSPORTS.COM: MLB LABOR AGREEMENT BY MID-MORNING

Multiple reports have MLB and MLBPA negotiators meeting through the night and into this morning, but no deal has been reached (Mult.).

However, FOXSports.com is reporting that MLB is "on the verge of an historic breakthrough" as a final agreement on a new labor contract with the union is "expected to be announced by mid-morning." They met for "almost a half an hour and the union gave them a proposal" (FOXSports.com, 8/30).

MLB.com reports that at 6:20am ET, MLBPA negotiators Steve Fehr and Michael Weiner "entered the Park Avenue offices of MLB for a follow-up session with management counterparts," but the meeting ended 25 minutes later, with Fehr telling a reporter, "There's no deal yet" (MLB.com, 8/30).

Brewers player rep Mark Loretta said that the strike deadline "could be extended past the start of that Cardinals-Cubs game," scheduled for 3:20pm ET. Loretta: "I think that would have to be a decision at the last minute. It could happen. Anything is possible at this point." In a separate interview with other reporters, NL player rep Tom Glavine "echoed that statement" (MLB.com, 8/30).

I got nothing to do, so I'm walking around CBS ... and you remember this guy named Dr. Phil who used to be married to Oprah? He's got a show on CBS ... and I said to him, 'Hi Dr. Phil. How are you doing?' And he said to me, 'Dave, do you want the plain, unvarnished truth, or do you want me to sugarcoat it?' ... If the show doesn't do well, they're going to change it to 'Judge Phil.' ... Did Jan and Dean win anything (at the MTV 'Video Music Awards')? ... Britney Spears – bless her heart – says now she would like a lower profile. She's had it with superstardom ... and I'm saying, 'Well hell, come over here to CBS.'" Letterman, on the baseball players possibly striking: "This is a sad thing because as you know baseball is our national pastime. Well, next to Indian casinos" ("The Late Show," CBS, 8/29).
