NFL MULLS KEEPING WILD CARD SCENARIO INTACT

The ARIZONA REPUBLIC reports that NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue "left open the possibility" of moving the Super Bowl, both the January 27 date it’s now scheduled for "and possibly even its New Orleans site, to allow the league to play a full postseason schedule as well as a full regular-season schedule." Yesterday, Tagliabue confirmed that the league would play a 16-week regular season (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 9/19).

N.Y. AND WASHINGTON, DC, STILL AIM TO HOST 2012 OLYMPICS

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that the Olympic bid committees in N.Y. and Washington, DC, "have emerged from the chaos of last week’s terrorist attacks even more determined to remain as potential host cities" for the 2012 Games. USOC Chair Charles Moore, on the two groups' desire: "Our sense is that they want to do it more so as opposed to less so. It is yet another rallying cry" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/19).

The S.F. CHRONICLE reports that S.F. "is expected to make the cut easily" when the USOC "narrows the list of cities bidding for the 2012 Summer Olympics from eight to perhaps four at next month's meeting in Salt Lake City." A USOC insider said after the task force’s visit to the Bay Area last month, "San Francisco came away from this very well. San Francisco really came off well" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 9/19).

NO PLANS YET FOR ESPN TO COVER FRIDAY’S CHARITY SHOW

The WASHINGTON POST reports that Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts and Bruce Springsteen "are among the celebs who have agreed to participate in the networks’ fundraising special Friday night" called "America: A Tribute To Heroes," which will air commercial-free on all of the major networks simultaneously. The networks also plan on carrying the show on their cable nets, although ABC parent Disney "has not made any final decision on which of its cable networks," which include ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNews, will carry the special (WASHINGTON POST, 9/19).

Meanwhile, the WASHINGTON TIMES reports that TV networks "lost about $500 million last week when they stopped airing commercials and shifted to round-the-clock coverage of the terrorist attacks" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 9/19).

SMALL-MARKET ROYALS PROJECT HIGHER PAYROLL IN ‘02

The K.C. STAR reports that the Royals "have tentative plans to hike their payroll spending about 27 percent to $45 million" for next season. Royals Chair David Glass, on the increase: "We’ve talked in that range. That’s probably realistic for us, although it pushes our outer limits and we’ll probably lose a little money." A $45M payroll would be a "92-percent raise since Glass bought the club in April 2000," but only two other AL clubs "currently have payrolls less than $45 million" (K.C. STAR, 9/19).

STOCK WATCH: MARKET SLOWS ON TUESDAY

The N.Y. DAILY NEWS reports that "markets stabilized in moderate trading yesterday, a day after its bone-rattling 685-point drop." However, the Dow still lost over 17 points while the Nasdaq dropped 24.47 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/19). NBR's Erika Miller said "many investors are relieved that heavy market selling did not continue [Tuesday], but analysts warn that volatility is likely to pick up" ("NBR," 9/18). CNNfn's Christine Romans: "It looks pretty stable but traders said that it was a market still in a state of confusion overall." CNNfn's Greg Clarkin said the "theme is the uncertainty over the political, the economic ramifications of the attacks last week and how that will play out" ("The N.E.W. Show," CNNfn, 9/18).
