The one-year pilot program allowing the Spurs to play four home games away from the AT&T Center "won the approval of Bexar County commissioners," who were "convinced by a public letter and personal visits" from Spurs Chair Peter Holt that the team will not move to Austin, according to a front-page piece by Scott Huddleston of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. The Spurs "can play two regular-season home games within 100 miles of the AT&T Center, one game within 10 miles of the arena and one outside the United States." The Spurs hope to play "two games in Austin's new Moody Center, one game at the Alamodome for the team's 50th anniversary and one in Mexico City." Holt in a public letter to Spurs fans last week "quelled" concerns over an eventual relocation and yesterday he "reiterated that message to county commissioners." A shake-up in the Spurs organization’s ownership nearly a year ago, which cut the number of local shareholders, has "fed concerns about the team’s future in San Antonio." Tech billionaire Michael Dell and S.F.-based private-equity firm Six Street Partners "stepped in as a new investors." They reportedly own a "combined 30 percent of the team." The team originally "requested permission to play four alternative home games in each of the next two seasons." Commissioners said that they "would approve a plan for the upcoming season, then consider changes for the 2023-2024 season after the Spurs gauged the effectiveness of the first year of the changes" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 5/18).
