Red Sox left in cold regarding Chris Sale injury due to lockout rules

The Red Sox were not informed of P Chris Sale's injury that will cause him to miss the start of the season "until last weekend when the lockout ended" due to league rules, according to Dan Shaughnessy of the BOSTON GLOBE. Sale injured himself last month training, but “because he hurt himself during the lockout, Sale could not go to the Red Sox for help." Sale broke a rib “throwing live batting practice” at his alma mater, Florida Gulf Coast Univ. However, he “couldn’t even tell” Red Sox manager Alex Cora or the team’s front office. Sale: “I let them know our first day here. ... It sucked for them, obviously.” Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom added, “We found out about it when we were able to get back in touch with him (last Thursday)” (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/17). In Boston, Jason Mastrodonato noted players "were not allowed on team premises" and had to "train on their own." The lockout "unquestionably made things difficult for both the teams and players, though teams were responsible for providing detailed plans to players before Dec. 1." Sale said, “This a freak accident. Would it have happened if I was training here the whole offseason? That’s an unanswerable question so why even waste time on that?" (BOSTON HERALD, 3/17).
