Franchise Notes

In Boston, Peter Abraham notes the Red Sox as an organization have "taken a stand" against racial injustice, but Red Sox players "have been silent during a period in history when professional athletes are literally standing tall in crowds and making their voices heard." This is "more circumstance than indifference." No Red Sox players "live in Boston full-time." The franchise also "traded two of their three Black players -- Mookie Betts and David Price -- in February." Betts and Price have been replaced on the roster, but the "leadership void remains and it becomes pronounced at a time like this." Red Sox officials have "encouraged the players to voice their opinions and promised support if they do" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/16).

DRIVE TO WIN: The Canadiens were on track to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive season before play was suspended in March, and team Owner, President & CEO Geoff Molson said of the team's performance, "Am I satisfied we took a step back? Of course not, and [Canadiens Exec VP & GM Marc Bergevin] knows that." He added, "The blunt answer is that our commitment to winning has never slipped. The hockey world has changed. There is an enormous amount of parity in the league right now" (CBC.ca, 6/13).
