Latest News: ATP Suspends All Pro Tourneys For Six Weeks

The ATP has "suspended all men's professional tennis tournaments for six weeks because of the coronavirus outbreak," according to the AP. No ATP Tour or ATP Challenger Tour events will "take place through the week of April 20." The tournament at Indian Wells, Calif., scheduled to begin main-draw play yesterday, already had been called off. The affected events are the Miami Open, the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open and the Hungarian Open. The next Grand Slam event, the French Open, is "still scheduled to be held in Paris beginning May 24" (AP, 3/12).

Below is a list of some of the other sporting events that have been impacted by the ongoing coronavirus threat.

  • Sources said that the Players Championship, which teed off this morning, will have "no fans for the rest of the week." The sources add that the same protocol will be in place "next week at Valspar and mostly likely weeks beyond" (TWITTER.com, 3/12).
  • St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman announced they are "cancelling general admission attendance" to the IndyCar Series' Firestone Grand Prix. The "fate of the race" will be announced this afternoon (TWITTER.com, 3/12).
  • The NASCAR Cup Series Dixie Vodka 400 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway is "postponed at this time." NASCAR officials will "decide whether or not to hold the race without fans" (TWITTER.com, 3/12).
  • The Quebec government has "axed the World Figure Skating Championships, slated to be held in Montreal starting Monday" (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 3/12).
  • The NLL will "suspend game play until further notice" (TWITTER.com, 3/12).
  • The World Cup cross-country ski races scheduled to be held next week in Minneapolis "have been canceled" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 3/12).
  • The Overwatch League has "cut all of its events through March and April" (VARIETY.com, 3/12).
