Hawks Recycling 12,500 Seats As Part Of Philips Arena Renovation

Renovation plans also include reducing Philips’ seating capacity down to 17,500NBAE/GETTY IMAGES

The Hawks and Atlanta-based recycling company Rubicon Global have recycled 12,500 seats from Philips Arena. The two parties were able to recycle 64 tons of material from seats removed from the arena as it goes through a $193M renovation. “Aligning with Rubicon, an industry leader in this space, underscores our commitment to keep Philips Arena a green facility,” said Philips Arena Exec VP & GM Brett Stefansson. Part of the renovations include reducing Philips’ seating capacity down to 17,500 from more than 18,000 seats. The Hawks are also installing new seats as part of the renovation. The arena upgrades also include reconfiguring a six-level wall of suites on one side of the building, new food and drink areas and installing a new scoreboard and display boards. Rubicon touts itself as a cloud-based, sustainability-minded recycling company and sees the Hawks project as a good way to show off its methods. “We couldn’t be happier to partner with our hometown Hawks during their historic renovation,” said Rubicon Founder & CEO Nate Morris.
