John Henry Dishes On Why He Decided To Dismantle Boston Globe's Leadership Structure

Eight top execs at the Boston Globe -- with "combined company experience of more than six decades -- have left the newspaper since last summer," a turnover that is "unprecedented" in the paper’s recent history, according to sources cited by Don Seiffert of the BOSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL. The moves are part of a "systematic dismantling at the hands" of Boston Globe Owner JOHN HENRY. The sources said that the "upheaval has spurred fear and uncertainty among employees about the future of the region’s largest media company." Henry, who also owns the Red Sox, said that the management turnover is his "effort to 'reset' the business culture of what he described as a largely wasteful and inefficient business." Henry in an email said, "The culture of the Globe on the business side ... needed to be reset, not because of staff but because of management." He added, "The challenge and disappointment has been squarely with senior leadership. We’ve finally dealt with those issues. I am squarely responsible for not dealing with these issues in the first year. ... Senior managers in many departments continued a way of operating that made little sense to me" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 1/8).
