Washington Paid Nearly $800,000 To Teams For Non-Conference Home Hoops Games

The Univ. of Washington men's basketball team spent $773,000 in payouts for 10 non-conference home games this season, but it was "money well spent as UW won every game," according to Percy Allen of the SEATTLE TIMES. UW paid $80,000-100,000 to seven teams that played at Alaska Airlines Arena, while giving $150,000 to the 2K Sports Classic, which "provided two nonconference home opponents." St. Martin's College got $8,000 for playing an exhibition game before the start of the season. UW last season "paid eight teams (including an exhibition game) $627,000." Meanwhile, UW took in $90,000 for its win Dec. 6 against Kansas at Sprint Center, which "essentially paid for" the trip to K.C. It is "not often UW receives a payout from a school for a road game that's not tied to a tournament and doesn't include a rematch at Alaska Airlines Arena at a later date." UW currently sits at 10-3 and begins Pac-12 play against USC tomorrow night (SEATTLE TIMES, 12/28).
