Longtime NFL Communications Exec Greg Aiello Leaving League After 39 Years

NFL Senior VP/Communications GREG AIELLO is leaving the league after the Super Bowl. He is taking a voluntary incentive plan the NFL is offering to longtime employees of a certain age to leave. “It’s a voluntary incentive program to support some of us who have dedicated our lives to the NFL but are ready to move on and do other things,” Aiello in an email wrote. “To sum it up, it’s been a wild 39-year ride.” The league has said it will not be disclosing the numbers of employees who are leaving, but one source said it is not a large number. A former sportswriter, Aiello started with the NFL in '90 as spokesperson. Before he stepped aside several years ago to manage internal communications at the league, Aiello’s name was attached as NFL spokesperson to all the major issues of the day for the NFL, from concussions to labor strife. He worked closely with NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL, former Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE and former Exec VP/Communications & Public Affairs JOE BROWNE. Prior to his work with the league office, Aiello was with the Cowboys PR and marketing departments from '79-90. Aiello worked for Newsday and UPI from '75-79.
