Crew Ownership Group Unveils Renderings For Proposed 20,000-Seat Stadium In Austin

Crew owner Precourt Sports Ventures on Thursday "produced preliminary renderings and a sketch of a stadium site at the Butler Shores Metropolitan Park" in Austin, according to Andrew Erickson of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. The rendering "depicts a 20,000-seat stadium ... with a 'community plaza' placed on the east side of the stadium." The site is the "current home of the South Austin Little League." Austin-based attorney Richard Suttle said that PSV is "'fully aware' of the need to take care of the league and improve the league's situation with neighbors and other stakeholders, adding that it will begin a 'comprehensive process' to do so." Suttle said that PSV has "examined other MLS stadiums throughout the country and other Austin events that have succeeded with little to no on-site parking." He said that he "envisions shuttles, ride-sharing and a supporters march to the match as alternatives" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 12/8). In Austin, Kevin Lyttle wrote if Austin "signs off on a privately financed stadium on city parkland near downtown," the owners of an MLS team "see a facility that would have a small geographic footprint yet make a giant positive impact on the community." To ease the strain on the neighborhood, the proposed stadium will have "no on-site parking." PSV President Dave Greeley noted there are 13,000 parking spots "within a 20-minute walk of the site." Suttle said that the stadium would be "built 15 to 20 feet into the ground so that the pitch has a margin above the water table yet allows for a structure that has the lowest possible ground-level presence" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 12/7).

TAKING IT TO COURT: In Columbus, Erickson & Henry in a front-page piece report Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is "prepared to take 'necessary legal action'" to keep the Crew from leaving town. He agrees that a '96 state law passed in response to late Browns Owner Art Modell's decision to move the team to Baltimore "could be used to keep the Crew in Columbus." The basis for the law says "no owner of a professional sports team in Ohio that uses tax-supported facilities or gets public financial assistance can move out of town unless the owner gives six months advance notice and gives the city or local individuals who live in the area the opportunity to purchase the team." Meanwhile, PSV in a statement said there is "nothing to address" in DeWine's announcement (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 12/8). Ohio State Rep. Mike Duffey said of the state law, "This is the one thing the Browns did for the state of Ohio that we should all praise them for." He added if people in Columbus "don't want to buy the team, they can move." But if people "want to buy the team, they've got to sell it" if it is a reasonable offer (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 12/7).
