Chuck Greenberg Still In Talks To Purchase Hurricanes, But Other Potential Buyers Emerge

Sports attorney Chuck Greenberg said yesterday that he and his partners are still in talks to buy the Hurricanes. Greenberg said, “It turns out that raising equity for hockey in North Carolina is a little more challenging than baseball in Texas or hockey in Pittsburgh or just about any sport anywhere. But we’re still at it. Hasn’t been sold yet. And we’ll see what happens.” Greenberg did not reference recent comments made by Hurricanes President Don Waddell, who said the team had not heard from Greenberg in "four to five weeks" (John Bauernfeind, Staff Writer). Waddell said that talks with Greenberg "have slowed down and that other possible buyers have emerged," including Topgolf Chair Tom Dundon. Waddell: “The Greenberg thing had been ongoing as we all know. It has slowed down. We haven’t heard back from Chuck in a while. We believe he is actively trying to find investors. But there are others groups that have now stepped forward and taking hard looks at the franchise." But Greenberg also said that he "remained interested in purchasing the Hurricanes and had been in contact as recently as this week with Allen & Co., which is managing the sale" for Hurricanes Owner Peter Karmanos. In Raleigh, Chip Alexander notes Canadian media outlet RDS first reported that Dundon "may have an interest in either acquiring the team from Karmanos or becoming a partner with Karmanos." Waddell said that Dundon "has toured PNC Arena." He also said that there are "two other interested groups in addition to the Greenberg group and Dundon." He added all are "committed to keeping the team in Raleigh." Waddell added that the letter of intent with the Greenberg group was "non-binding and had expired" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 11/30).
