Does NFL Social Media Policy Need Changes To Better Embrace African-American Culture?

The NFL’s "limits on social media, and teams’ subsequent mockery of the decision, exposes a blind spot about American culture," as African-Americans "dominate what’s trendy on social media," according to THE UNDEFEATED's David Dennis Jr., who wrote under the header, "Are We Entering The End Times For The NFL?" If "'Black Twitter' determines that something is viral, it often becomes an American cultural phenomenon." If the NFL "wants to maintain its dominance, it needs to embrace black culture or get left behind." The NBA "dominates" the NFL on social media, which is where "everything is happening." A major reason for the NBA’s ability to "lap the NFL in social media is the NFL’s draconian rules about sharing videos online." MLB and the NBA have both been at the "same racial crossroads." One league "offers the NFL a blueprint for success, and the other a cautionary tale." Dennis: "Doomsdays. Humanity has always been obsessed with them. But the NFL is at a crossroads at a time when black culture is simultaneously as powerful, relevant and under attack as at any point in American history. What side of that history is the NFL going to stand -- or kneel -- on?" The NFL has "decisions to make, and so do its players and fans" (THEUNDEFEATED.com, 10/23).
