Jeter Makes First Big Marlins Hire, Brings On Yankees' Denbo To Head Player Development

Yankees VP/Player Development Gary Denbo is "leaving his job" to become Marlins Dir of Player Development & Amateur Scouting, according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. Denbo is "not expected to be above" Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill in the team’s hierarchy. Hill has three years "remaining on his contract," but Denbo will have a "strong voice on Marlins personnel matters" (MIAMI HERALD, 10/9). In Ft. Lauderdale, Tim Healey notes new Marlins CEO Derek Jeter has "made his first significant hire" in Denbo, who was his "longtime mentor" from his days with the Yankees. With the Yankees, Denbo was in charge of "overseeing a farm system widely seen as one of the best in baseball." The move is a "major one for Jeter." Denbo’s new role is "similar" to the one former Marlins exec Jim Fleming had through '11. It is "not clear what Denbo’s hiring means" for Marlins VP/Scouting Stan Meek, whose contract is up (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 10/10).

CRUNCHING NUMBERS: In Miami, Douglas Hanks notes Miami-Dade County recently "signed the Marcum auditing firm to scour" profit-sharing numbers once former Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria’s accountants "reveal how much the team says it owes taxpayers" from his $1.2B sale of the team last week. Loria’s '08 deal with Miami and Miami-Dade included "payout provisions if he sold the team within six years" of the '12 opening of a county-owned ballpark. The deal "requires the Marlins to pay the two governments" 5% of the proceeds of a sale (MIAMI HERALD, 10/10).
