Philips Arena Seating Capacity Will Be Reduced As Part Of Two-Phase Renovation Project

Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said that the renovations of Philips Arena will "result in the reduction of about 2,350 seats," according to Chris Vivlamore of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. Koonin last week said the seating capacity of the building is "down to 15,700 and this is because the suite wall is gone." Vivlamore notes the Hawks have "not announced the exact capacity for basketball or submitted the figure to the NBA." During the '14-17 seasons, the "listed basketball capacity for Philips Arena was 18,047." Philips Arena is undergoing a major two-phase renovation project that "began immediately after last season." Phase one is "expected to be completed before the start of the NBA regular season next month" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 9/28).
