A typical Friday night for AEG President & CEO DAN BECKERMAN starts with a walk around the corner with his family to their favorite Italian restaurant, a nice wind-down activity for the leader of one of the sports industry's most diverse companies. But while most weekends center around family time for the father of two, this weekend is a whirlwind of marquee sports events. On the docket? Saturday's CANELO ALVAREZ-GENNADY GOLOVKIN fight, the Chargers' regular season opener at StubHub Center, then the Primetime Emmy Awards and finally a toast to L.A. landing the '28 Games. Beckerman spoke with THE DAILY on how he'll manage his time and what he's most looking forward to on his jam-packed schedule.
OFF & RUNNING: Friday I’ll be leaving for Vegas early after I drop the kids off at school that morning. When I get there we have a partners meeting with MGM actually looking at another project we’re developing together after collaborating on T-Mobile Arena. That night we have plenty of partners and sponsors coming in from all over the country for the fight and we have a big dinner that night all together. Saturday we have a B2B summit at T-Mobile in advance of the fight with a lot of our sponsors (from Toyota to Coca-Cola, dozens of others). I usually get to the arena a good five-six hours before the event starts. I’ll walk the building, look at the stages we’re utilizing. Then I’ll spend some time with promoter TOM LOEFFLER then also with OSCAR DE LA HOYA. He’ll be attending the B2B summit as well. I gotta tell you, I usually pick a winner ahead of the bouts but this one is too close for me to call. We’ve had so many fights with both of these guys and they’re both fantastic and at the peak of their careers. This has been a great run for T-Mobile, it feels like we were just there for MAYWEATHER-MCGREGOR.
READY FOR KICKOFF: A bunch of our partners will fly back late Saturday night to get to StubHub Center early that next morning for the Chargers home opener. It’s extraordinary having the Chargers there and I think the buzz is going to be incredible. I’ll get there about five hours before kickoff, spend the day walking the building and then meet up with DEAN SPANOS. We have a fantastic relationship with him that started maybe 10 years ago. His family is so passionate about this team and they’re very gracious hosts. We’ve seen a lot of MLS teams play in NFL stadiums but for them to bring their NFL team to an MLS stadium is something we’ve never seen before.
WALKING THE RED CARPET: After the game I need to make sure I get to L.A. Live in time for the Primetime Emmy Awards. I’ll make a little extra time to hop into my tuxedo postgame. Then we’re in Microsoft Theater for the awards and then after that just a couple blocks up the street we’re gonna finish up the weekend with a celebration with CASEY WASSERMAN and THOMAS BACH for the LA ’28 Olympic selection. So it’s a pretty full weekend and not typically what I expect. When I look at a weekend like this it reminds me of how much our company has changed even over the last 5-10 years.
FAMILY FIRST: I try to balance my schedule out as best I can. Family time really helps with that, too. It’s important to get back Saturday night for me so I can be there to cook breakfast for my wife and kids. Maybe play a little tennis before heading to StubHub on Sunday. Even with everything else going on, that really is the most important thing for me. On a typical weekend, I'm normally the chauffeur for the kids, taking them around to their dance rehearsals and sports practices. We enjoy being outdoors and spending time together. My older daughter loves going to awards shows so she’s a little jealous of the Emmys on Sunday. But we do a good job of getting to plenty of Galaxy and (NHL) Kings games most weeks as a family which they really enjoy as well.
