North Carolina AD Cunningham Says School, Nike Close To Renewing Apparel Contract

The Univ. of North Carolina is "close to renewing its apparel contract with Nike," according to Nolan Hayes of INSIDE CAROLINA. UNC AD Bubba Cunningham: “We’re working with them on an extension. We should have that done in the next couple of months.” Hayes noted UNC and Nike are in the "final year of a 10-year contract that is set to expire on June 30, 2018." UNC’s current Nike contract, signed in '09, is valued at approximately $37.7M. The current contract had an "exclusive negotiating end date of Jan. 1, 2017, allowing UNC to begin engaging in discussions and negotiations with other apparel companies at that time." Cunningham said that UNC "did not exercise that right." If a new contract is signed, it will be the "fifth such agreement between UNC and Nike." The school would be in "line for a much bigger payout" in the wake of Louisville's new 10-year, $160M extension with Adidas struck last month (SCOUT.com, 9/5). This season marks the first year that UNC football has been using the Jordan Brand logo on its uniforms instead of the Nike swoosh (THE DAILY).
