K.C. Submits Bid To Be Host Site For '26 World Cup; Montreal Announces Candidacy

K.C. representatives yesterday "submitted an official bid" to serve as a host site for the '26 World Cup, with Arrowhead Stadium as the "designated venue to hold matches," according to Sam McDowell of the K.C. STAR. Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman and Sporting KC President Jake Reid "presented the proposal in person" in N.Y. with a booklet titled, "Unity," bypassing the option to "fill out an online application." After receiving 34 U.S. official entries yesterday, it is expected the Unified Bid Committee will "trim that list to about 20-25 stadiums later this fall." It is "likely that a dozen U.S. cities will host at least one match." Some will "host more." The committee asked its potential host sites "how they could serve the overall mission of unity." Reid said, "We think we’re as well-positioned as anyone else. We are able to pull together their theme -- unity-- better than anyone, we believe. Hopefully that resonates with them" (K.C. STAR, 9/6). Meanwhile, Montreal yesterday announced its "official candidacy to be a host city" for the '26 event. In Montreal, David Rudin notes both the Olympic Stadium and Saputo Stadium have been "mooted as potential sites for the tournament, but Montreal’s statement does not clarify which site would be used." Soccer Canada also "invited Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Regina, Calgary and Edmonton to bid for host city status" (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 9/6).
