Cowboys' Telethon Raises More Than $2M For Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

The Cowboys on Thursday "raised more than" $2M for The Salvation Army's hurricane relief fund during a 90-minute telethon, according to Jon Machota of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Several Cowboys players "answered phones and conducted TV interviews, helping to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief" while the rest of the team participated in a live practice (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/1). In Ft. Worth, Drew Davison notes Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones "called into his organization’s telethon" and told WR Dez Bryant on the other end of his pledge of $1M. Bryant said, "It was cool, man. Mr. Jones being Mr. Jones. I think it was great. A real super cool thing." Jones "served as the most memorable call on the night." The Cowboys had "several of their stars on the phone lines" including Bryant, QB Dak Prescott, C Travis Frederick, G Zack Martin and LB Sean Lee. Also joining them were Pro Football HOFers Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Tony Dorsett (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 9/1). In Dallas, Jori Epstein reports the Cowboys -- "accompanied by 30,000 pieces of clothing -- spent Thursday afternoon at The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center in Dallas" unloading and organizing merchandise. The players "turned organizing $500,000 worth of Cowboys and college sports merchandise into a fun team-bonding experience." The Cowboys' visit was "brief but efficient, players laughing as they challenged each other to see how fast they could pass the boxes of clothing down the line of Cowboys" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/1).

HELPING OUT: MLS has "pledged $500,000" to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey relief efforts (CHRON.com, 8/31)....The PGA Tour donated $250,000, while Dell -- which serves as title sponsor of this week's PGA Tour Dell Technologies Championship outside Boston -- "doubled that total" (ESPN.com, 8/31).
