Univ. Of Houston's Fertitta Center Flooded, But Venues Escape Hurricane Largely Unscathed

Univ. of Houston AD Hunter Yurachek called the Fertitta Center, the school's basketball arena, "virtually a swimming pool" following Hurricane Harvey, according to Sam Khan of ESPN.com. The arena is "currently being renovated and wasn't expected to be used this season." It is scheduled to open for the '18-19 season. Beside the Fertitta Center, Yurachek said that the school was "fortunate not to sustain major damage to facilities" (ESPN.com, 8/31). In Houston, Joseph Duarte noted the school's indoor football practice facility "also under construction took in water." Yurachek said that the $20M facility is "expected to be ready by the end of September or early October." In addition there was some "minor damage caused by flooding to the Carl Lewis Auditorium, which is used for football team meetings." Yurachek: "Nothing is going to interfere with our teams preparing for upcoming games" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/1).
