Packers' Ted Thompson Not Thinking About Retirement, Won't Provide Timeline

Packers Exec VP, GM & Dir of Football Operations Ted Thompson on Wednesday said that he is "not thinking about retirement, and gave no indication his 13th season in charge of the team’s football operation will be his last," according to Jason Wilde of the WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL. But when "asked why he doesn’t just tell all those inquiring minds what they want to know about his career time line, Thompson smirked." Thompson: "Then you wouldn’t stay for the (whole) movie." Thompson said that he "doesn’t know how much longer he will work -- or will want to work." But with a contract that is "believed to run" through the '19 NFL Draft, he "made it clear he feels just fine." Thompson said, "I’m good to go" (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 8/4). ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky noted less than two months ago, Packers President Mark Murphy "essentially gave Thompson an open invitation to remain on the job as long as he wants." Murphy would "not say specifically" when Thompson's contract expires. Murphy would have "plenty of options" from the scouting tree of Thompson and former GM Ron Wolf, including Wolf’s son Eliot, who "works under Thompson." However, he would not be the "only internal candidate" (ESPN.com, 8/2).
