League Notes

In N.Y., Greg Howard notes UFC fighter Jon Jones has "wiped out" the light-heavyweight division before, and Saturday night after his KO of Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 he "called out Brock Lesnar." That would be a "megafight that could slip into the mainstream, as well as a dubious one, akin to the coming boxing match" between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor (N.Y. TIMES, 7/31).

MAKING THE CONNECTION: In N.Y., Larry Brooks reported the NHL is in the "midst of what could be extremely costly litigation with players over past concussion practices." That "may preclude" league administration from "speaking honestly about related current medical issues regarding the potential link of brain injury to sustaining head shots on the rink" (N.Y. POST, 7/30).

GETTING IT RIGHT: In Indianapolis, Jim Ayello noted to IndyCar CEO Mark Miles' disappointment, last week's unveiling of the '18 IndyCar "came and went without" a windscreen prototype "or 'aero screen' for the racing world to behold." Miles said that the prototype is "not ready to be tested" and he is "unsure when it will be." While there are "many obstacles to overcome," Miles and IndyCar "have the support of the majority of the paddock." Meanwhile, F1 is "dealing with some blowback over its introduction of the 'halo,' which will be used" by the series starting in '18 (INDYSTAR.com, 7/28).
